Meet Your Care Team: Amanda Small, NP

Meet Your Care Team is our ongoing series of interviews featuring the talented people behind the medicine at Radiology Imaging Associates and Invision Sally Jobe.

Meet Amanda Small, Nurse Practitioner

How, when and why did you decide to pursue a career in medicine?

I worked in the field of accounting prior to deciding on a career in healthcare. While I enjoyed the mental tasks this entailed, it was very monotonous with limited interpersonal interactions. I yearned for a career that would offer me a sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction. I also wanted to pursue a career that would afford me the opportunity to feel like I had made a significant contribution to society, helped others in need, and be remembered as such. Healthcare seemed like the obvious choice!

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy the variety and diversity that healthcare offers — in terms of job duties and patient interactions. You can choose a career path that is very broad or very specialized, and just about anything in between. Regardless of the path you choose, you will constantly be learning as healthcare is an ever-evolving field. As for my patients, I find it incredibly rewarding to be able to care for them during what is likely a frightening, and possibly life-threatening, time and help guide them through a treatment plan and, hopefully, see them through to recovery!

What is your favorite way to spend free time (away from work)?

I enjoy a variety of activities in my spare time: cooking, decorating, outdoor activities, travel. Though, my favorite thing to do is spend time relaxing at home with my husband and my dog. I like to keep things pretty low key.

What do you like most about working at RIA?

I enjoy the team atmosphere that we have. We all work together to do what’s best for the patient. If that means reaching out to a colleague for a second opinion, or even deferring a procedure to a colleague, then that’s what we do. All of our providers really have the patient’s best interests at heart and want to see them get the best possible care and outcomes! There is a tremendous amount of respect and support for each other, and I think that comes through in the care we provide.
