What You Need to Know...

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a common but often underdiagnosed condition that affects the veins in your legs. If you've experienced leg swelling, aching, skin changes, or visible varicose veins that worsen over time, CVI could be the underlying cause. At RIA Endovascular, our team of board-certified interventional radiologists offers advanced, minimally invasive treatments that target the root cause of CVI and help restore your quality of life.

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

CVI occurs when the valves in the leg veins become weakened or damaged, making it difficult for blood to return to the heart. This leads to blood pooling in the legs, causing a range of symptoms including:

  • Leg heaviness or fatigue

  • Swelling (especially by the end of the day)

  • Varicose veins

  • Skin discoloration

  • Itching or ulceration around the ankles

Without treatment, CVI can worsen and lead to serious complications like venous ulcers or blood clots.

Expert Diagnosis and Evaluation

At RIA Endovascular, every CVI evaluation begins with a detailed consultation and a noninvasive venous ultrasound to assess vein function and blood flow. This allows our physicians to determine the severity of your condition and tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs.

Minimally Invasive Treatment Options

Our team specializes in leading-edge, outpatient treatments for CVI that are safe, effective, and require little downtime.

1. Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

A small catheter is inserted into the diseased vein, and heat from a laser is used to close it off. Blood is naturally rerouted to healthier veins, relieving symptoms and improving circulation.

2. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Similar to EVLA, this technique uses radiofrequency energy instead of laser to seal off the faulty vein. RFA is quick, effective, and performed under local anesthesia.

3. Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

For smaller varicose veins or residual veins after ablation, a medical foam is injected into the vein under ultrasound guidance, causing it to close and eventually disappear.

4. Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Visible varicose veins near the surface may be removed through tiny skin punctures. This procedure is performed in-office and offers excellent cosmetic and functional results.
