If you've been told that knee replacement surgery is your next step but you're not ready for a major operation, there is another option for many patients.
At RIA Endovascular, we offer an innovative, minimally invasive procedure called Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE). This outpatient treatment is designed to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve quality of life for patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Our fellowship trained, interventional radiologists specialize in image guided procedures that treat a variety of conditions without the need for open surgery. These minimally invasive treatments often result in less pain, shorter recovery times, and a faster return to normal activities.
What Is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)?
During the procedure, a small catheter is inserted through a tiny incision, typically in the groin or wrist, and guided to the genicular arteries, the blood vessels that supply inflamed tissues within the knee. Using advanced imaging guidance, tiny particles are delivered through the catheter to reduce abnormal blood flow associated with inflammation.
By decreasing inflammation within the joint, GAE can help reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness, allowing patients to move more comfortably and improve their daily function.
Am I a Candidate for GAE?
GAE may be a good option for patients who:
A consultation with one of our specialists can help determine whether GAE is right for you.
What Happens During a GAE Procedure?
GAE is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and takes approximately one to two hours to complete. Patients receive local anesthesia and moderate sedation to ensure comfort throughout the treatment.
Following the procedure, most patients return home the same day. Recovery is generally quick, with minimal downtime. While individual results vary, many patients begin to experience improvement in their symptoms within several weeks.
Why Consider GAE Instead of Major Surgery?
For patients who are not ready for knee replacement surgery, GAE offers a non-surgical alternative that may provide meaningful and lasting pain relief. Because the procedure requires only a small incision, patients typically experience a faster recovery and fewer risks compared to traditional surgery.
You don't have to live with chronic knee pain, and surgery may not be your only option.
