Compassion, Precision, and Innovation at RIA Endovascular

At RIA Endovascular, patients meet not only world-class specialists but also physicians who truly care about improving lives. One of those physicians is Dr. Todd Kooy, a board-certified interventional radiologist whose combination of technical skill and human connection has made him one of Colorado’s most respected vascular specialists.

From Seattle to Denver: A Journey in Precision Medicine

Dr. Kooy’s path to interventional radiology began at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, where he developed an early interest in minimally invasive medicine.

“I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving,” he says. “Interventional radiology lets me help people in real time—using imaging, creativity, and precision to make a direct impact.”

After completing his residency and fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the University of Washington, Dr. Kooy joined the faculty there before ultimately bringing his expertise to Colorado. Today, he’s part of the RIA Endovascular team in Greenwood Village and Windsor, providing advanced outpatient treatments that help patients avoid major surgery.

A Leader in Minimally Invasive Care

Dr. Kooy’s work focuses on image-guided procedures that treat conditions such as vascular disease, liver disease, varicose veins, and internal bleeding—all without large incisions or long hospital stays.

“Medicine has come a long way,” he explains. “We can now treat many conditions through a tiny incision, often with less pain and a faster recovery. That’s what motivates me—the ability to give people back their quality of life quickly and safely.”

His approach combines science and empathy. He takes time to educate patients about their options and what to expect, often drawing diagrams or reviewing images together during consultations.

“Patients appreciate when you slow down and really explain what’s happening,” he says. “Knowledge helps replace fear with confidence.”

Recognized for Excellence

In 2019, Dr. Kooy was honored as Physician of the Year at Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver—a recognition that reflects both his medical expertise and his compassion. Colleagues describe him as approachable, collaborative, and deeply committed to his patients and teammates.

“He’s one of those physicians who inspires people around him,” says a longtime colleague. “He brings out the best in others—whether it’s a patient, nurse, or fellow physician.”

Philosophy of Care: Listen, Guide, and Empower

When asked about his philosophy, Dr. Kooy doesn’t hesitate:
“My job isn’t just to perform a procedure—it’s to listen. Every patient has a story, and understanding that story helps tailor the best treatment plan.”

He emphasizes that minimally invasive treatments aren’t simply about convenience—they’re about freedom. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone who was struggling with pain or fear return a few weeks later smiling, feeling better, and living normally again.”

Life Beyond the Lab

Outside of work, Dr. Kooy enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring Colorado’s mountains with his family and friends. Whether hiking, skiing, or cycling, he appreciates the same qualities that drive his medical practice—focus, balance, and perseverance.

“Colorado offers this amazing mix of nature and innovation,” he says. “It’s a perfect place to practice interventional radiology because people here value both health and an active lifestyle.”
